The couple is Joanna (Keira Knightley) and Michael (Sam Worthington) — she with Knightley’s English sophistication, he with Worthington’s Australian straightforwardness — who are living in New York City. Filmmaker Massy Tadjedin, making her directorial debut, creates a shiny atmosphere of gleaming surfaces in which to set their tale, so that when the plot begins to head toward adultery, it seems like just another consequence of the urbane life.Watch Best Night Ever Movie Online Tadjedin has a real feeling for this. The film opens with Joanna and Michael at a party for his work (she’s a writer; he’s some sort of urban designer) and she watches him talking with his sexy co-worker Laura (Eva Mendes). There’s something intimate in this that bothers her, and although everything is cordial on top, there’s a disturbing resonance below. “I’ve been meaning to order your book,” Laura says to Joanna when she’s introduced, and the look between the two women could be used to slice the Brie.Watch Best Night Ever Movie Online At home, Joanna launches into one of those out-of-the-blue arguments that begin with the back-and-forth choreography of people in a confined space determined not to look at one another until they’re ready to accuse. It’s reminiscent of the scenes in Eyes Wide Shut when Tom Cruise learns that Nicole Kidman was once attracted to another man: artificial yet fraught at the same time, an argument that’s probably based on something else.Watch Best Night Ever Movie Online “You didn’t tell me anything about her before, but I guess you know that,” says Joanna, a woman not so much betrayed as kept in the dark.Watch Best Night Ever Movie Online This is all prologue, however, to the main action of Last Night. Michael is going on a business trip to Philadelphia, a trip that Laura will also take. Joanna, left at home, just happens to run into Alex (Guillaume Canet), a smooth Frenchman who was her occasional lover before she got married. It’s clear that he still occupies a place in her heart: the dangerous man closer to her own spirit than her stolid husband. The fact he’s French adds to the cosmopolitan feeling of Last Night; it never feels specific to any one place except that of the transoceanic beautiful people who live such glamorous love lives.Watch Best Night Ever Movie Online “You smell the same,” Alex says, embracing Joanna. “You do, too,” she replies, and the stage is set for a four-handed play of feints and temptations. Tadjedin moves the action between Philadelphia — where Michael and Laura are having after-dinner drinks with that out-of-town flirtation that makes hotel bars so sexy — and New York, where Alex and Joanna also go to dinner and reminisce about their mutual attraction. The drama comes in wondering how far each of these temptations will go; its tension comes in knowing about the earlier jealousies. Last Night is slightly lopsided in its storytelling, partly because Worthington — whose blocky heroism helped ground the otherworldliness of Avatar — doesn’t have the erotic allure that you’d think would attract someone like Mendes. Knightly and Guillaume are more believable as a couple, and their story has more resonance.
